Yoskay Yamamoto's paintings and sculptures have combined elements of his Asian heritage and the urban LA art scene. He has an upcoming solo exhibition this Saturday titled "Familiar Strangers" at LeBasse Projects. If only I could hop on a plane to California to see it.

Kristiana Parn
I was immediately drawn to Kristiana Parn's lovely paintings when I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn, NY today. Her artwork has all the elements I could ever ask for: sleepy bunnies and other adorable animals slumbering in a marshmallow dreamland... on wood panels! I really wanted to buy a few prints (only $20!) but I liked too many of them! Soon, when I am settled in the new home, there will be lots of walls to adorn with her prints :] I'm so delighted to be acquainted with her artwork.
Cate, I know you're not too fond of some animals, but I hope you can make exceptions to Kristiana's critters :D

Really, I think one’s art goes only as far and as deep as your love goes.
I don’t paint these hills around Chadds Ford because they’re better than the hills somewhere else. It’s that I was born here, lived here — things have a meaning for me.
I do an awful lot of thinking and dreaming about things in the past and the future — the timelessness of the rocks and the hills — all the people who have existed there. I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure in the landscape — the loneliness of it — the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.
I think anything like that — which is contemplative, silent, shows a person alone — people always feel is sad. Is it because we’ve lost the art of being alone?
When I die don't ever worry about me. I don't believe in being there for the funeral. Remember that. I'll be flying far away, off on a new tack. Something new that's twice as good.

Life and Death
Edelgard Clavey, 67
First portrait:

Edelgard was divorced in the early eighties, and lived on her own from then on; she had no children. From her early teens she was an active member of the Protestant church. She contracted cancer about a year before she died, and towards the end she was bed-bound. Once she was very ill she felt she was a burden to society and really wanted to die.

"Death is a test of one’s maturity. Everyone has got to get through it on their own. I want very much to die. I want to become part of that vast extraordinary light. But dying is hard work. Death is in control of the process, I cannot influence its course. All I can do is wait. I was given my life, I had to live it, and now I am giving it back.
German photographer Walter Schels was terrified of death, but felt compelled to take these extraordinary series of portraits of people before and on the day they died. His partner Beate Lakotta recorded the poignant and revealing interviews with the subjects in their final days.

Ancient Korea style
Far out in the ocean the water is as blue as the petals of the loveliest cornflower, and as clear as the purest glass. But it is very deep too. It goes down deeper than any anchor rope will go, and many, many steeples would have to be stacked one on top of another to reach from the bottom to the surface of the sea. It is down there that the sea folk live.
